Shilp Katha 2014, a craft sustenance initiative by SID is into its second year of existence. The institutional objective is to conserve and bring about a product diversification of the Indian textile Crafts. Keeping in mind India’s rich craft culture spanning a variety of areas such as wood, metal, textile, leather and many more, we decided to extend the scope of this initiative towards non textile crafts of India as well.
This year, along with the Fashion Design students who explored the Textile crafts of various states, the Fashion Communication students also explored some non-textile crafts of our country. The crafts covered this year are Gujarat – Roghan painting, Rajasthan - Lehariya, Uttarakhand – Nettle Craft, Karnataka - Kasuti, Uttar Pradesh- Chikankari, Karnataka – Kinnal toys, Orissa – Soara paintings and Ganjappa cards, Andhra Pradesh – Cherial painting and Rajasthan – Molela tiles. The students had been to these different states, met the craftsmen and got acquainted with the crafts. This research was documented and then applied to conceptualize and develop products. The garments / products have been designed and developed by the students of Fashion Design and Fashion Communication - Batch 2012-2016 and the styling, brand identity and exhibition have been conceptualized and put up by the students of Fashion Communication of the same batch.
Like last year, this year too, we are screening Craft Documentation Films made by our students of VFD and FC as a special part of this event. We are also hosting a Craft Film Festival in collaboration with ‘Aadhar – Heritage Film Festival’, Ahmedabad. An Exhibition of the works of the students displaying garments as well as products developed using these crafts shall also be put up. We have also invited artisans from these places to participate in this exhibition thus providing them an opportunity to increase awareness of their crafts as well as to increase their visibility.
