Department : Graphic Design

Snehal Balapure is a communication designer, typographic practitioner, and educator whose work explores the expressive and structural potential of letterforms across design and artistic contexts. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Typography from Government School of Art and Design, Nagpur, where her academic training established a sustained engagement with typography as both a system of communication and a medium of visual and cultural expression. She began her academic career as an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Design, Nirma University, Ahmedabad, where she taught courses in typography and communication design, contributing to the development of students’ conceptual clarity, visual sensitivity, and material understanding. She joined the Symbiosis Institute of Design in January 2026, continuing her commitment to design education grounded in critical inquiry and practice-led learning. Prior to academia, Snehal worked across advertising, corporate communication, publication design, and digital product environments, contributing to brand identity systems, editorial and book design, and user interface design for mobile applications. This professional experience continues to inform her pedagogical approach, enabling her to bridge foundational principles with contemporary design practice.

Alongside her academic role, she maintains an active artistic practice centred on calligraphy and experimental typography. As a member of the Letters n’ Spirit collective, her work was exhibited in the group exhibition Letters n’ Spirit — ‘Unbound’ at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, in 2025. Her exhibited works explored the transformation of letters into abstract visual expressions, reflecting her ongoing investigation into rhythm, gesture, and the material and cultural dimensions of script. Her teaching and research interests include typography, publication design, and visual identity, with a focus on helping students develop thoughtful, process-driven approaches tocommunication design that are attentive to form, meaning, and context.
