Product Design is where creativity meets technology, materials and human needs to shape the products of tomorrow. At SID, students learn to observe people, understand their needs and transform insights into innovative, functional and meaningful products. The specialization combines design thinking with an understanding of materials, manufacturing, technology, ergonomics and market needs, enabling students to approach product development from concept to realization.
Students are encouraged to visualize, ideate, problem-solve and experiment through a hands-on design process that includes sketching, form development, engineering drawing, 3D modelling, prototyping and product representation. They explore a wide range of materials and technologies while learning how considerations of usability, ergonomics, functionality, aesthetics, sustainability and manufacturing influence the design of a product.
The learning experience extends across diverse product contexts, from consumer goods, furniture, toys and lifestyle products to electronic products, mobility and emerging technology-driven products. Through studio projects, prototyping and industry-oriented learning, students develop the ability to translate ideas into viable product solutions while building a strong understanding of the relationship between people, products and their environments.
The broad and evolving nature of Product Design opens up career opportunities across multiple industries. Graduates can pursue roles as Product Designers, Industrial Designers, Automobile Designers, Furniture Designers, Toy Designers, Consumer Electronics Designers, Experience Designers and Design Consultants, as well as explore design management and product development roles within industry.
