Animation and Film Design

Animation and Film Design brings together animation, filmmaking, visual storytelling and emerging technologies to create compelling moving-image experiences across entertainment, media and digital platforms. At SID, students learn to communicate ideas, narratives and emotions through animation and film, exploring both the crafted worlds of animation and the visual language of cinema. The specialization develops the ability to imagine, conceptualize, produce and refine moving-image content—from the first story idea and storyboard to filming, animation, editing and final production.

The programme offers a multidisciplinary exploration of cinematic storytelling, animation, cinematography, sound design, acting, visual design, storyboarding and animatics, character design, environment design and post-production. Students work across 2D and 3D worlds, learning principles of animation, 3D modelling and texturing, rigging, character animation, lighting and camera, while also developing skills in live-action filmmaking, narrative audio, advertising films and social media video content. Through hands-on studio projects and production-oriented learning, students experience the different stages of creating moving-image work. They develop stories and visual concepts, create storyboards and animatics, design characters and environments, work with cameras, lighting and sound, experiment with animation and visual effects, and bring their work together through editing and post-production. Experimental projects, advertising film production, craft-based projects and interdisciplinary electives further encourage students to develop an individual creative voice. A strong emphasis on experimentation and emerging technologies enables students to explore contemporary approaches to moving-image creation. Students learn to use these technologies as creative tools while developing the conceptual, visual and storytelling skills needed to make meaningful and original work.

The breadth of the discipline opens up opportunities across the rapidly expanding film, animation, entertainment, advertising, gaming, digital media and content industries. Graduates can explore careers as Animation Designers, Character Animators, 3D Artists, Storyboard Artists, Motion and Visual Effects Artists, Cinematographers, Film Editors, Sound Designers, Directors, Production Designers and Digital Content Creators, as well as work across advertising, social media and other emerging moving-image platforms.
